Haryana Government Mandates EV Charging Infrastructure in New Residential and Commercial Buildings

TL;DR

Haryana now mandates EV charging infrastructure in new buildings with 10+ parking spots, requiring one charging point for every five residential spaces and three commercial spaces.

The Haryana Government has amended its Building Code 2017, making it mandatory for all new residential and non-residential buildings with parking facilities for at least 10 cars to include electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This policy change, effective June 11, 2026, aims to significantly boost EV adoption and promote green mobility across the state.

Under the revised regulations, residential developments, including group housing societies and cooperative housing projects, must now provide one EV charging spot for every five parking spaces. Commercial and other non-residential buildings, such as malls, hotels, and office complexes, will face a stricter requirement, needing one charging station for every three parking spaces.

The updated code also introduces several supportive measures: it allows charging stations in basement and stilt parking areas, excludes EV charging infrastructure from floor area ratio (FAR) calculations, and permits apartment owners in existing buildings to install charging facilities in designated parking spots, subject to necessary approvals and safety clearances. These provisions are expected to alleviate range anxiety and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.
