The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) has revealed an ambitious plan to establish a comprehensive network of public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) every 25-30 kilometres along national and state highways throughout Telangana. This initiative aims to significantly bolster EV adoption by addressing range anxiety and providing convenient charging options for electric vehicle owners across the state.
Locations under consideration for these charging stations include existing infrastructure like restaurants, dhabas, other food outlets, and spaces within 500 metres of an electric sub-station. Additionally, government-owned lands alongside roadways, as well as various government offices, hospitals, schools, and railway stations in Tier I and II cities, are being eyed for setting up these facilities. The Managing Director of TGREDCO, V. Anila, stated that the corporation plans to increase the number of public EVCS to 6,000 by 2030 and further to 12,000 by 2035.
Currently, Telangana has over 1,030 EVCS, with approximately 600 located in Hyderabad. The state has already seen a substantial increase in energy consumption for EVs, rising from 2.60 million units (MU) in September of the previous year to 10.15 MU in September of this year, largely driven by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation’s (TGSRTC) EV bus fleet. The establishment of these charging stations is supported by subsidies provided under the PM E-Drive scheme, helping to mitigate the setup costs which can be around ₹15 lakh for a 60KW charger.
