Supreme Court Proposes Luxury Petrol and Diesel Vehicle Ban to Propel EV Adoption in India

The Supreme Court of India has suggested that the central government consider imposing a ban on high-end luxury vehicles powered by petrol and diesel. This proposal aims to accelerate the country's transition towards electric mobility, with the court observing that such a measure would not significantly impact the common citizen and could establish a precedent for a wider shift to cleaner transportation. During a hearing on a public interest petition concerning the effective implementation of India’s electric mobility policy, a bench of justices urged the Centre to develop a comprehensive roadmap for promoting and phasing in EV policies nationwide. The court highlighted that with larger electric vehicles now available, restricting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the luxury segment could be an effective starting point for the transition.
