Odisha Government Mandates Electric Vehicle Adoption for All Official Fleet Procurement

TL;DR

Starting June 1, 2026, the Odisha Government mandates all official vehicle procurements to be electric, setting price caps and approving models from major Indian manufacturers.

The Odisha Government has issued a directive making it mandatory for all state departments and supported institutions to procure electric vehicles (EVs) for official use, effective June 1, 2026. This move aims to significantly reduce fuel expenditure and promote sustainable mobility across the state. Exceptions for purchasing petrol or diesel vehicles will only be granted under special, limited circumstances.

The directive outlines specific maximum price limits for new EVs based on the designation of the official. For instance, the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice, and High Court Judges are allowed EVs up to ₹30 lakh, while ministers and senior officers have a limit of ₹25 lakh. District Judges, Collectors, and Superintendents of Police are capped at ₹20 lakh. The government has approved models from Tata, Mahindra, and Maruti for official use.

Departments are required to obtain prior approval from the Finance Department before purchasing EVs, and new vehicles can only be acquired after existing ones complete their lifespan and are officially scrapped. This initiative aligns with Odisha's broader sustainability goals and supports India's national transition towards cleaner energy and reduced carbon emissions.
