TL;DR
Navi Mumbai will soon launch eight new public EV charging stations, offering 48 charging points as part of a public-private partnership to boost electric mobility.
Navi Mumbai is set to significantly enhance its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with the imminent operationalisation of eight new public charging stations. These stations, part of the first phase of development, will provide a total of 48 charging points across Zone-1 and Zone-2 of the city. This initiative by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is being executed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, reflecting a concerted effort to support the growing demand for EVs.
The expansion aligns with the central government's policy to promote electric vehicles, combat air and noise pollution, conserve energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The national target aims for at least 30% electric vehicles by 2030, with NITI Aayog setting an ambitious goal of 80% electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers by the same year. NMMC conducted a comprehensive survey to identify suitable locations for these stations, including public spaces like lay-bys, malls, government offices, and bus terminuses.
The initial phase involves agencies such as Kay Bee Batteries Private Limited, Road Grid India Private Limited, and Delta Electronics India Private Limited establishing these charging stations at their own cost. NMMC will earn a revenue of ₹4 per kilowatt-hour from these operations and has allocated ₹2 crore from the 15th Finance Commission's air quality improvement fund to support this infrastructure development. The long-term vision includes increasing the total number of EV charging points to 143 across 24 clusters in the city, ensuring accessibility near busy public areas.
