TL;DR

India dramatically expanded its electric vehicle charging network in 2025, installing over 27,000 stations at petrol pumps nationwide to boost EV adoption.

India has made significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure throughout 2025, with the installation of over 27,000 new charging stations across the country. This expansion is primarily concentrated at existing petrol pumps, aiming to enhance the adoption of electric cars and two-wheelers by making charging more convenient and accessible. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas confirmed this achievement in its year-end press release, noting that 8,932 charging stations were established under the FAME-II government scheme.

In addition to government initiatives, oil marketing companies played a crucial role by setting up over 18,500 additional charging stations using their own funds, bringing the total count to 27,432 charging points nationwide. This strategic placement at familiar fuel stations is expected to mitigate 'range anxiety' among potential EV buyers. Furthermore, public sector oil companies are developing approximately 4,000 'Energy Stations' by 2028, which will serve as integrated mobility hubs offering a variety of fuels, including conventional options, biofuels, and EV charging facilities.
