TL;DR
Electric car sales in India saw an 82% increase in July 2026, driven by higher fuel prices and growing consumer preference for EVs.
India's electric car market witnessed an exceptional surge in July 2026, with sales jumping by 82% compared to the previous year. A total of 31,788 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold, a significant increase from 17,509 units in July 2025. This robust growth has boosted the share of electric cars in new car sales to 7.8% last month, up from 5% in the same period last year.
The impressive sales performance is largely attributed to sharply higher fuel prices, which are increasingly steering consumers towards more affordable and eco-friendly personal transportation options. Major carmakers in India are responding to this rising demand by ramping up their production capacities, signaling a strong and sustained momentum for the electric vehicle segment in the country. Total car sales, encompassing petrol, diesel, EV, and CNG models, also grew by 18% in July.
