TL;DR

India has surpassed the US in electric car sales share for six consecutive months since April 2026, driven by local production and a global shift towards energy security.

A recent report by the independent global energy think-tank Ember reveals that India has outperformed the United States in the share of fully electric new car sales for six consecutive months, beginning in April 2026. This significant achievement places India among 15 countries that have surpassed the US in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales share in 2026, including markets like Brazil, Italy, Malaysia, and New Zealand. Out of 56 nations monitored, 49 now record a higher share of electric car sales than the US, where the BEV market share saw a decline to 6% during the first eight months of 2026 due to the rollback of federal EV incentives.

Indian automakers Tata and Mahindra collectively captured over 60% of the country's electric vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, a testament to the ongoing ramp-up in local production capacity. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles globally is increasingly linked to energy security and protection against crude oil volatility. Oil supply disruptions have accelerated EV adoption in several markets, including India. Between March and August 2026, electric vehicle fleets in oil-importing nations displaced approximately 200 million barrels of crude oil, resulting in savings of $20 billion. China accounted for the largest portion of this reduction, saving $14 billion, while EU member states saved $3.1 billion, led by Germany and France.
