The Indian government has reinforced its commitment to deepening domestic manufacturing in the electric vehicle (EV) sector by implementing tighter localization norms for electric buses and trucks. Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, key components for traction motors and controllers in M2/M3 e-buses and N2/N3 e-trucks are now mandated to be manufactured in India, with a deadline of April 1, 2027. This move aims to reduce reliance on imports and foster a robust indigenous EV supply chain.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries issued two notifications on September 3, amending the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP). For e-buses, the revised PMP requires domestic manufacturing of traction motors, including the rotor and stator assembly, bearing, enclosure, connector, and cable fitment, starting from September 1, 2026. By April 1, 2027, this requirement will extend to magnet and shaft fitment. Similar stringent localization requirements have been prescribed for traction motor controllers, including inverters, with the assembly of electronic components, semiconductors, and connectors on printed circuit boards also mandated from April 2027.
