Electric Vehicle Penetration Surges in India's Passenger Car Segment
0 মন্তব্য

TL;DR

Electric vehicle penetration in India's passenger car market surged to 6.5% in Q1 FY27, driven by factors like high fuel prices, even as overall auto industry growth is projected to moderate.

Electric vehicle (EV) penetration within India's passenger vehicle market reached approximately 6.5 percent in the first quarter of FY2027, marking a notable increase from 4.6 percent in FY2026. This acceleration in EV adoption is partly attributed to elevated fuel prices, as reported by rating agency ICRA.

ICRA projects that overall wholesale industry volume growth will moderate to 4-6 percent in the current fiscal year. This moderation is anticipated following a strong first quarter, reflecting the elevated base of FY2026, a normalization of pent-up demand, rising vehicle costs, and the potential impact of a weak monsoon on rural demand.

Despite the expected moderation in overall growth, passenger vehicle wholesale volumes saw a 24 percent year-on-year increase in June 2026, reaching 3.9 lakh units, as automakers maintained production to meet domestic demand. Retail sales in the same month grew by 38 percent, supported by GST rate cuts, an extended summer wedding season, and demand for recently launched models. For the April-June quarter, wholesale dispatches expanded by 26 percent, while retail registrations saw a 31 percent year-on-year increase.
