TL;DR

Indian consumers' growing demand for advanced technology is transforming the automotive market, blurring lines between luxury and mass-market features and boosting India's role in global auto tech development.

The Indian automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by an increasing consumer appetite for advanced technology, according to Krishna Kumar G, Managing Director of Harman India. The distinction between luxury and mass-market vehicles is blurring as features once exclusive to premium cars are rapidly making their way into mainstream passenger vehicles. This trend includes technologies such as large digital displays, connected services, driver monitoring systems, and immersive in-cabin experiences.

Kumar highlighted that Indian buyers have become highly aspirational, making India a receptive market for introducing new automotive technologies. He noted that selling new technology in India is now easier compared to some other markets, attributing this to rising affordability and consumers' willingness to pay for innovative features. Features like panoramic displays, advanced driver assistance functions (ADAS), and over-the-air software updates are increasingly becoming crucial factors in purchasing decisions.

This shift in consumer behavior is also reshaping India's role in global automotive development. Harman's India operations, initially established as a global engineering center, are now expanding beyond mere execution to contribute more significantly to global technological advancements. The growing integration of mobility and digital ecosystems, with EVs emerging as a key smart device category after smartphones, further underscores this technological evolution in the Indian auto sector.
