BloombergNEF Report Indicates India's EV Sales Rise but 2030 Targets Face Challenges

TL;DR

BloombergNEF's 2026 report reveals rising EV sales in India but forecasts the country will miss most of its 2030 adoption targets, except for three-wheelers.

According to the India Transition Factbook 2026 by BloombergNEF, electric vehicle sales in India are experiencing an upward trend, driven by lower total cost of ownership, increased model availability, and sustained policy support. However, despite this growth, the report suggests that India is likely to fall short of most of its ambitious 2030 EV adoption targets.

The government has set targets for EVs to constitute 80% of two- and three-wheeler sales, 70% of commercial vehicles, and 30% of private cars by 2030. While three-wheelers are projected to be an exception, BNEF's modeling indicates that the country will not meet the majority of these goals.

The report highlights India's leading role in clean power adoption, being the second-largest market for annual solar and wind capacity additions in 2025, after China. However, the challenges in achieving broader EV penetration across various vehicle segments suggest a need for further concerted efforts and policy adjustments to bridge the gap between current progress and the ambitious 2030 targets.
