Indian Auto Market Prepares for a Wave of New 7-Seater Electric Vehicles

TL;DR

The Indian auto market is preparing for a significant launch of 7-seater electric vehicles from manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai, indicating a shift towards larger family-friendly EVs.

The Indian automotive landscape is set to witness a significant surge in the 7-seater electric vehicle segment, with multiple automakers gearing up to introduce new models. This trend reflects India's accelerated transition towards electric mobility, moving beyond traditional fuel-guzzling large vehicles. Maruti Suzuki, for instance, has been spotted testing its upcoming three-row electric MPV, internally codenamed YMC, which is anticipated to debut globally by late 2026 and go on sale in 2027.

The Maruti Suzuki YMC will be built on the HEARTECT-e skateboard platform, shared with the e Vitara, and is expected to offer two battery options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Despite its larger size, the YMC is still projected to deliver a driving range of around 500 km on a single charge. Similarly, Tata Motors is also anticipated to launch an electric version of its popular Safari SUV later this year, sharing its battery and motor specifications with the Tata Harrier EV, with an estimated range of about 600 km.

Other manufacturers are also contributing to this burgeoning segment. Hyundai is preparing an entry-level electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, expected in early 2027, which might feature a boxy design and two battery pack options. The increasing demand for electric 7-seaters underscores a growing consumer preference for larger, family-friendly EVs that combine practicality with sustainable performance.
