TL;DR
Delhi has become India's largest electric bus hub with over 4,000 e-buses after a recent induction of 500 new units, alongside plans for further expansion and deployment by GreenCell Mobility.
Delhi has emerged as India's foremost hub for electric buses, following the induction of 500 new electric vehicles into the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet. This significant addition brings the total number of electric buses operating in the national capital to over 4,000, surpassing other states like Maharashtra. The initiative is part of Delhi's broader strategy to champion green mobility and establish a sustainable urban transport model.
The new buses were officially flagged off from Ramlila Maidan, with prominent political figures in attendance. This expansion is not just about increasing numbers but also focuses on enhancing connectivity, reducing emissions, and fostering sustainable urban mobility. Furthermore, an interstate electric bus service between Delhi and Panipat was also inaugurated, aiming to offer commuters a cleaner and more comfortable travel option. The Delhi government has ambitious targets to further expand its electric bus fleet, aiming for 7,500 by the end of 2026 and 14,000 by 2028.
In related developments, GreenCell Mobility is set to deploy an additional 570 electric buses in Delhi over the coming months. This deployment is backed by an $89 million investment from institutions like the International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII), and Tata Capital, indicating strong investor confidence in scalable electric mobility solutions for India. These new 12-meter air-conditioned electric city buses are specifically designed to meet Delhi’s operational requirements and challenging road conditions.
