Skoda India Plans Diversified Fuel Strategy with Focus on CNG and Electric Vehicles

TL;DR

Skoda India is prioritizing cleaner fuel options, with immediate plans for CNG integration in its Kylaq SUV and active discussions for a locally manufactured EV, while expanding its market reach.

Skoda India is strategically focusing on expanding its cleaner fuel offerings, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs), to broaden its customer base in the competitive Indian market. While electrification remains a long-term goal for the brand, immediate plans are more advanced for CNG, particularly with the successful compact SUV Kylaq driving sales volumes and attracting first-time buyers.

Brand Director Ashish Gupta confirmed active discussions around a locally manufactured EV for the domestic market, with potential for exports. However, a definitive launch timeline for an EV in 2026 or FY27 is not yet committed, as factors like platform choice, localization depth, cost viability, and regulatory clarity are still being assessed. Gupta noted that importing small volumes of European EVs would not be strategically sound for the Indian market.

In the interim, Skoda is actively developing a factory-fitted CNG option for the Kylaq, recognizing that approximately 20% of the compact SUV segment already operates on CNG. Alongside its product strategy, Skoda is also prioritizing network expansion, aiming to reach 200 cities and 350 touchpoints by 2026, covering nearly 90% of India's addressable market.
