LPG Supply Prioritization Poses Production Risks for Indian Auto Industry

TL;DR

India's auto industry faces potential production disruptions as the government prioritizes LPG for domestic use, causing concerns over fuel supply for manufacturing processes and petrochemical feedstock.

The Indian automobile industry is anticipating potential production disruptions due to the government's decision to prioritize petroleum gases for domestic cooking fuel, amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has reportedly engaged with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) to seek clarity on the availability and supply visibility of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), piped natural gas (PNG), and propane.

These fuels are extensively used in both automobile and auto-component manufacturing plants, providing essential clean and controllable heat for critical processes like forging, casting, and heat treatment of metal parts. Siam emphasized that advance visibility on supply is crucial for companies to minimize potential production delays.

The MoPNG's revised order, issued recently, significantly broadens the scope of an earlier directive, now covering all 'C3 and C4 streams' of light hydrocarbon gases. This prioritization could also impact the petrochemical supply chain, which is vital for producing materials like plastics and synthetic rubber used in automotive components, potentially leading to feedstock shortages and increased input costs for manufacturers.
