Vimag Labs Patents India's First Software-Defined, Magnet-Free EV Motor

TL;DR

Vimag Labs has secured a patent for India's first software-defined, magnet-free EV motor, marking a significant technological advancement in electric mobility.

Vimag Labs, an Indian deep-tech company backed by Accel, has secured its fifth patent in India for a groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) motor technology. The patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” establishes the foundational architecture for the company's Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform. This innovative development marks India's first software-defined, magnet-free motor platform, poised to revolutionize electric vehicles and industrial machinery.

The VMSM platform eliminates the need for rare-earth magnets, aligning with India's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives by fostering indigenous high-end electric motor technology. According to Manish Seth, Co-founder and CEO of Vimag Labs, this patent is the culmination of over 87,600 engineering hours, strengthening the company's commercial roadmap for OEM partnerships, licensing, and manufacturing scale-up, while establishing a scalable, software-driven foundation for global electrification.
