Tata Motors Adopts Chery-JLR Freelander Platform for Upcoming Avinya Premium EVs

TL;DR

Tata Motors will use the Chery-JLR Freelander platform for its premium Avinya EV series, aiming for a 2027 launch to accelerate development and leverage advanced technology.

Tata Motors is set to license the Freelander automaking platform from China's Chery, a joint venture partner with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in China, for its upcoming premium Avinya electric vehicle (EV) lineup. This strategic decision marks a pivot from Tata's original plan to use JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) for Avinya models, a roadmap that was shelved last year when JLR opted not to build EMA-based EVs in India.

This collaboration aims to accelerate the development and market introduction of Tata's luxury electric cars by leveraging Chery's advanced platform, thereby granting Tata access to sophisticated features and technology. The first Avinya model, codenamed P2 or Avinya X, is anticipated to launch in 2027. These EVs will be manufactured at Tata's newly opened facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu, with initial units likely to be assembled from Chinese kits.

The Avinya brand is envisioned as a standalone premium electric car marque, separate from Tata's existing product range. The initial Avinya models are expected to feature battery packs ranging from 65kWh to 80kWh, balancing range, weight, and affordability. This move is crucial for Tata Motors to maintain its leadership in India's rapidly evolving EV market and close any gaps in its premium EV portfolio.
