Mercedes-Benz India has begun local production of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS at its manufacturing facility in Pune. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as India becomes the only country outside the US to manufacture the GLS Maybach.
This strategic move is expected to reduce the vehicle's price by approximately ₹40 lakh, bringing it closer to ₹2.75 crore due to lower customs duty implications from local assembly. Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer highlighted that the company is intensifying its manufacturing efforts in the country, also planning to produce an electric vehicle (EV) variant and another combustion engine vehicle locally.
The decision to localize production reflects Mercedes-Benz's increasing focus on India's high-end segment, where demand for premium and ultra-luxury vehicles continues to grow. In 2025, the company sold 19,007 vehicles in India, with top-end vehicles accounting for 25% of sales.
