Maruti Suzuki Intensifies EV Component Localization and Infrastructure Development

TL;DR

Maruti Suzuki is focusing on localizing EV component production and strengthening its charging and after-sales network in India to boost consumer confidence ahead of its e-Vitara launch.

Maruti Suzuki India is accelerating its plans to localize battery production and other critical electric vehicle (EV) components over the coming years. This strategic move aligns with the impending launch of the e-Vitara, the company's first all-electric vehicle in the domestic market, scheduled for next year. The automaker aims to bolster consumer confidence by simultaneously expanding its charging infrastructure, improving after-sales support, and offering assured resale value for its EV offerings.

The company's Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), Partho Banerjee, highlighted the importance of a robust EV ecosystem for widespread adoption, noting that the current EV market is not growing at the same pace as internal combustion engine vehicles. Maruti Suzuki plans to establish 1,500 EV-enabled workshops across 1,100 cities nationwide and has already installed 2,000 charging points. By FY30, Maruti Suzuki targets having five EV models in its portfolio, but acknowledges the need to reassess market penetration post-GST 2.0 reforms.
