India's EV Charging Network Expands Significantly, Surpassing 27,000 Public Stations

TL;DR

India's public EV charging infrastructure has grown to over 27,700 stations, with government schemes like FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE supporting this expansion to boost electric mobility.

India has achieved a notable expansion in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with the total number of public charging stations reaching 27,737 as of March 1, 2026. Out of these, 22,753 stations are now operational across the country, marking a crucial step in supporting the nation's transition to cleaner mobility. This significant growth underscores the government's commitment to enhancing EV adoption and alleviating range anxiety among consumers. Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu lead the states with the highest installations.

The FAME-II Scheme played a vital role in this development, with ₹912.5 crore sanctioned for EV charger installations, of which ₹655.43 crore has been utilized. Furthermore, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme has allocated ₹2,000 crore for the deployment of EV Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) nationwide, although no funds had been released for this specific component as of March 24, 2026. The government has also de-licensed the setup of EV charging stations, encouraging greater participation from the private sector to further accelerate infrastructure growth.
