India's electric vehicle (EV) transition is gaining significant momentum with the addition of over 31,500 public charging points in the past year, marking a more than fourfold increase in annual deployments compared to the previous cycle. This rapid expansion is coupled with growing consumer confidence, as a HERE-SBD EV Index 2026 study reveals that 87% of surveyed consumers are now more likely to consider an EV than a year ago.
The study also highlighted a substantial increase in total charging power capacity by 1.65 GW, with the average charger power rising from 32 kW to 45 kW, indicating a strong investment in higher-powered charging infrastructure. Consumer perception of charging availability also improved, with 62% reporting better local charging access in 2026, up from 57% in 2025. Telangana has emerged as a leader in India's EV readiness rankings.
