Indian EV Passenger Vehicle Sales Witness Remarkable 84% Growth in FY2026

TL;DR

Indian passenger EV sales surged by 84% in FY2026 to nearly 200,000 units, driven by discounts and new launches, with Tata, MG, and Mahindra leading the market.

The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market for passenger vehicles experienced unprecedented growth in the financial year 2026, recording an 84% year-on-year increase in sales. A total of 198,224 electric passenger vehicles were sold, contributing 4.3% to the total 4.7 million passenger vehicle sales in FY2026, up from 2.7% in FY2025. This surge was propelled by substantial discounts, new product launches, and rising concerns over fuel prices and vehicle costs.

Tata Motors maintained its dominant position in the EV market, selling 77,658 units and capturing a 39.2% market share, though its share saw a slight decrease from FY2025. JSW MG Motor India demonstrated impressive growth with 52,408 EV sales, a 74% year-on-year increase. Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the fastest-growing EV brand, significantly boosting its market share from 7.8% to 21.2% by selling 42,006 units in FY2026. The market is increasingly competitive with both established players and new entrants expanding their electric portfolios.
