Indian Electric Two-Wheeler Sector Faces Supply Challenges Amid Surging Demand

TL;DR

Indian electric two-wheeler sales hit record highs in July, causing a supply roadblock for OEMs struggling to meet demand and leading to extended waiting periods.

India's domestic electric two-wheeler sales reached an unprecedented penetration of 11.2 percent in July, a substantial increase from 7.7 percent in the same month last year. This remarkable surge in demand, primarily attributed to fluctuations in global crude oil prices, has led to an unforeseen crisis for Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who are now grappling with a significant backlog of unfulfilled customer orders. The unfulfilled demand for major industry players is estimated to be between 20-30 percent, resulting in an average waiting period exceeding four weeks.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has urged leading OEMs such as TVS Motor Company, Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp to boost production to meet the escalating demand. Industry experts anticipate that this supply crisis will intensify during the upcoming festive season and could persist until the first half of 2027. In absolute figures, EV two-wheeler demand witnessed an 88.3 percent increase, rising from 108,000 units in July 2025 to 204,000 units in July 2026, highlighting the urgent need for production ramp-ups and new manufacturing units.
