Indian Automakers Tata and Mahindra Top Global EV Energy Efficiency Ranking

TL;DR

Tata Motors and Mahindra have been ranked globally as leaders in EV energy efficiency by ICCT, outperforming Tesla and BYD due to their focus on compact, city-friendly models.

Indian automakers Tata Motors and Mahindra have achieved a significant milestone, topping the global ranking for electric vehicle energy efficiency. A 2025 assessment by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) revealed that these Indian companies possess the most energy-efficient battery electric vehicle lineups among 22 major automakers worldwide, surpassing established EV giants like Tesla and BYD, which ranked third and fourth respectively.

The study highlights a key competitive advantage for Indian manufacturers: their focus on developing smaller and lighter EV models, often designed as compact crossovers. These vehicles are well-suited to India's congested urban environments, shorter daily commutes, and a price-sensitive market. This approach allows Tata and Mahindra to provide sufficient range with smaller batteries, making their EVs lighter, more affordable, and ultimately more energy-efficient compared to larger, longer-range models.
