India is preparing a significant initiative to establish dedicated control and command centers for electric vehicles (EVs) on its access-controlled expressways. These Public-Private Partnership (PPP) centers will offer real-time roadside assistance, charging facilities, technical support, minor repairs, and battery support, directly addressing range anxiety for long-distance EV travel.
The under-construction Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is slated to be the first corridor to implement this comprehensive EV support ecosystem. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) plans to extend this model to other expressways and national highways connecting major cities, aiming to normalize electric mobility for intercity travel.
This development is expected to significantly boost consumer confidence in EVs for longer journeys. Currently, India has approximately 29,000 public chargers and 3,500 battery swapping stations, with the government allocating ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-Drive scheme to support the upstream costs of setting up charging and swapping infrastructure.
