India Set to Implement Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication Technology by Late 2026 for Enhanced Road Safety

TL;DR

India plans to implement Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication technology nationwide by late 2026 to significantly enhance road safety and reduce accidents.

The Indian government is preparing to roll out Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology across the nation by the end of 2026, aiming to significantly improve road safety and reduce accidents. This innovative system will enable vehicles to communicate directly with each other without relying on mobile networks, exchanging real-time data to prevent collisions.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced this initiative, highlighting its potential effectiveness in preventing accidents involving parked vehicles and reducing pile-ups during low-visibility conditions like dense fog. The technology is designed to provide 360-degree awareness, alerting drivers to nearby vehicles from all directions, even in challenging environments.

The V2V system will function through a small SIM-like device installed in vehicles, transmitting information such as location, speed, and braking status via a dedicated radio frequency band. While the exact pricing for consumers is yet to be finalized, initial implementation will focus on new vehicles, with broader adoption expected over time to work in conjunction with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
