Domestic Automakers Lead in Five-Star Safety Ratings and Expand Market Share in India

TL;DR

Indian automakers Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors are leading Hyundai and Kia in five-star safety ratings and increasing their market share in the passenger vehicle segment.

Indian automakers Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles are outperforming their Korean rivals, Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, not only in domestic sales volumes but also in the number of five-star safety-rated models under the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). This surge in safety credentials has coincided with stronger domestic sales for Indian brands, with Mahindra and Tata collectively increasing their passenger vehicle market share to 27.73% in April–December FY26.

Tata Motors is leading with 10 models securing five-star ratings, while Maruti Suzuki has four five-star models including the Dzire, Victoris, Invicto, and e Vitara. Industry analysts suggest that a growing consumer preference for SUVs and a heightened emphasis on crash safety are contributing to domestic brands narrowing the historical perception gap with global competitors.
