Alternative Fuels Outpace Petrol Cars in India's Passenger Vehicle Market for First Time in August 2026

TL;DR

For the first time in India, alternative-fuel passenger vehicles (CNG, hybrids, EVs) outsold petrol cars in August 2026, signaling a major shift in consumer buying patterns.

In a significant shift for the Indian automotive landscape, alternative-fuel vehicles (including CNG, hybrids, and EVs) collectively surpassed petrol cars in market share for the first time in August 2026, capturing 41.95 percent of the passenger vehicle market. This milestone indicates a substantial change in consumer preferences, as petrol and ethanol-powered cars saw their market share decline to 40.85 percent in the same month.

According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), this trend marks a reversal from just over a year ago when petrol cars held an almost eleven percentage point lead. Within the alternative fuel segment, CNG cars accounted for the largest portion at 25.28 percent, followed by hybrids at 9.04 percent, and electric vehicles (EVs) at 7.63 percent. The share of electric passenger vehicles, specifically, grew from 5.8 percent in August 2025 to 7.63 percent in August 2026, demonstrating consistent growth in the EV sector.
