The Indian used car market is mirroring the new car segment's affinity for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), with their market share significantly increasing. According to the Cars24 and Team BHP Gears of Growth 2025 report, SUV representation in the used car market climbed from 15 percent in 2023 to 32 percent in 2025.
Despite this surge, hatchbacks continue to form the backbone of India's used car market. The report indicates that only one SUV, the Hyundai Creta, made it into the top 10 most-bought used cars, ranking ninth. Seven of the top ten positions are occupied by popular hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift, Wagon R, and Hyundai i10, recognized for their reliability, practicality, and economical running costs. This trend points to a dual reality: while aspirational buyers are increasingly opting for used SUVs, fundamental demand for efficient hatchbacks persists.
