TL;DR
India is playing a crucial role in the global clean energy transition through its growing electric vehicle adoption, particularly in the two and three-wheeler segments, despite recent slower growth.
India is increasingly asserting its position as a key player in the global clean energy and bioenergy transition, with expanding electric mobility adoption being a crucial factor in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. A recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights India's sustained role in this shift, particularly in the electric two- and three-wheeler segments.
Despite a moderated growth in electric two-wheeler sales, influenced by reduced subsidies and stricter localization mandates, India maintained its status as the world's second-largest electric two-wheeler market and the leading market for electric three-wheelers in 2025. Global electric two-wheeler sales experienced a 15 percent year-on-year increase, reaching nearly 10 million units and constituting approximately 14 percent of total worldwide two-wheeler sales.
