VinFast Outpaces BYD in India's Early 2026 Electric Vehicle Sales

TL;DR

VinFast has surpassed BYD in India's electric passenger vehicle sales in early 2026, marking a significant shift in the competitive EV market.

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has gained an early lead over China's BYD in India's electric passenger vehicle sales for 2026. Data up to March 3rd shows VinFast selling over 850 units compared to BYD's more than 550 units, signaling an intensifying competitive landscape among foreign EV brands in the country.

This early traction has positioned VinFast as the fourth-largest player in the electric passenger vehicle segment in January, trailing behind established names like Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, and Mahindra & Mahindra. In contrast, BYD currently ranks eighth in the same segment.

VinFast entered the Indian market in September 2025 with two electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7, strategically priced between ₹16 lakh and ₹25 lakh. This pricing strategy has allowed the brand to target a crucial segment, attracting customers looking to upgrade from mass-market EVs without venturing into the higher price bracket of luxury electric vehicles, where BYD's offerings begin around ₹25 lakh.
