Telangana Government Initiates Exclusive EV Discounts for State Employees

TL;DR

Telangana offers state government employees up to 20% discounts on EVs, in addition to existing tax exemptions, to accelerate adoption and promote sustainable transport.

The Telangana government has launched a pioneering initiative offering state government employees significant discounts on electric vehicle (EV) purchases. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that after negotiations with leading EV manufacturers such as Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors, and Ather Energy, employees can now avail up to 20% off on electric two- and four-wheelers.

This new scheme complements the existing EV policy, which provides 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for all types of electric vehicles. The combined benefits are expected to make EV ownership highly affordable in the state, potentially saving employees up to ₹4 lakh. The Transport Minister emphasized that by empowering government employees as early adopters, Telangana aims to accelerate the transition towards cleaner mobility across society.

Further solidifying its commitment to green transportation, the Telangana Chief Minister, Anumula Revanth Reddy, has mandated that all government departments must exclusively purchase EVs. This directive also extends to hired vehicles within core urban areas, signifying a strong push towards building a sustainable transport ecosystem. Additionally, the state plans to expand charging infrastructure across government offices and major public parking spaces to support this transition.
