Tata Motors Reclaims Second Position in India's Passenger Vehicle Market in Q1 FY27

TL;DR

Tata Motors reclaimed the second position in India's passenger vehicle market in Q1 FY27, driven by strong SUV sales, surpassing Mahindra.

Tata Motors has successfully recaptured the second spot in India's passenger vehicle market during the first quarter of FY27, surpassing Mahindra & Mahindra. This resurgence is primarily driven by robust and sustained demand for utility vehicles (UVs) within its portfolio. The April-June quarter witnessed Tata Motors dispatching 1,87,953 passenger vehicles, ahead of Mahindra's 1,74,745 units, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The company's strong performance was spearheaded by its popular SUV models, with the Punch emerging as its top-selling model, recording 60,321 units, followed closely by the Nexon with 55,561 units. This shift marks a reversal from FY26, when Mahindra had briefly overtaken Tata Motors. Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominant leadership position with 5,25,228 units, while Hyundai Motor India held the fourth spot with 1,39,374 units in the quarter.
