SUVs Dominate 2025: India Witnesses Absence of New Mass-Market Hatchback and Sedan Introductions

TL;DR

2025 marked a historic shift in India's auto market with no new mass-market hatchback or sedan launches, as carmakers fully embraced SUVs, crossovers, and EVs.

For the first time in India's automotive history, the year 2025 concluded without the launch of any new mass-market hatchback or sedan. Carmakers in the country have decisively shifted their focus, pivoting entirely towards the SUV, crossover, and electric vehicle segments. This significant trend highlights a changing consumer preference and strategic reorientation by manufacturers to cater to the booming demand for larger, more versatile vehicles.

While popular sedan models like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze continued to perform well, these were launched in the preceding year and did not receive mid-life updates or new generations in 2025. The midsize sedan segment, in particular, saw a decline in customer interest, with models like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz being discontinued. The market was instead flooded with new SUV and crossover offerings such as the Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6, Tata Motors' Harrier EV and Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, new Hyundai Venue, and Kia Carens Clavis.
