ORIX Corporation Expands Vehicle Leasing and Rental Fleet in India, Signaling Market Shift

TL;DR

ORIX Corporation plans to significantly expand its vehicle leasing and rental fleet in India, betting on rising demand and a structural shift in automotive access.

India's automotive market is approaching a significant inflection point in vehicle leasing, as ORIX Corporation, a Japanese mobility solutions and financial services provider, plans to substantially expand its fleet in the country. The company aims to increase its India fleet from 50,000 to between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh vehicles in the short to medium term. This strategic move is driven by a rising demand for leasing and rental models, indicating a structural change in how Indian consumers are accessing cars.

Hidetake Takahashi, President and Group CEO of ORIX Corporation, highlighted India as one of its two global focus growth markets, expressing strong optimism for the future of vehicle leasing and rentals. The growing Indian economy, increasing foreign direct investment, and the entry of more multinational companies, along with a rise in domestic entrepreneurs, are all contributing to a favorable environment for ORIX's expansion. The shift towards usage-based mobility and low leasing penetration currently around 3 percent of overall vehicle sales, are key factors influencing this projected acceleration in growth.
