Meghalaya Flags Off Electric Buses, Renews EV Policy to Promote Green Mobility

TL;DR

Meghalaya launched electric buses and renewed its EV policy, offering tax exemptions to promote sustainable public transport and green mobility.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma recently flagged off a fleet of five electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility in Shillong. This initiative aims to provide cleaner, greener, and more efficient public transportation while actively reducing carbon emissions. Concurrently, the state government announced the renewal of its electric vehicle policy, which includes crucial exemptions on registration fees and road taxes for EVs.

The newly launched air-conditioned, zero-emission buses are capable of covering 180 to 200 km on a single charge and are designed to be inclusive, featuring designated wheelchair spaces and foldable ramps. Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the viability of electric vehicles even in Meghalaya's challenging terrain and expressed hope for increased EV adoption among citizens. This move is part of a broader strategy to alleviate congestion in Shillong and encourage a shift towards public transportation.
