Maharashtra Government Declares Zero Toll for Electric Vehicles, Bolstering Adoption

TL;DR

Maharashtra has mandated zero toll fees for electric vehicles and ordered immediate refunds for past collections, aligning with its 2025 EV policy.

In a significant boost for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Maharashtra government has mandated zero toll fees for EVs across the state, effective immediately. This directive includes a clear instruction for toll operators to refund any erroneously collected tolls from EV owners, a move that aligns with the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025.

The policy aims to accelerate EV proliferation through various incentives, including tax concessions, registration fee exemptions, and subsidies. Officials acknowledged that technical glitches in the backend integration of FASTag systems and the VAHAN vehicle database had previously led to incorrect toll deductions for EVs. Toll operators are now required to swiftly update their systems to ensure accurate classification and prevent future unwarranted charges for electric vehicles.
