India has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with the number of public charging stations now surpassing 52,000 across the country. Out of these, 16,561 are equipped with fast EV chargers specifically designed for cars. This expansion is a direct result of the government's concerted efforts to alleviate 'range anxiety' among EV users and accelerate the adoption of electric mobility nationwide.
The Union Ministry of Heavy Industries has allocated substantial funds under key schemes to achieve this goal. Specifically, ₹912.50 crore has been allocated under the FAME-II scheme and an additional ₹2,000 crore under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme for deploying EV public charging stations, particularly in urban centers and along national highways. The FAME-II scheme, which concluded on March 31, 2024, supported the sale of approximately 16.72 lakh electric vehicles and deployed 5,197 electric buses.
Further facilitating this growth, the Ministry of Power issued the "Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2024," setting standards for a connected and interoperable charging network. Moreover, setting up EV charging stations has been made an unlicensed activity, simplifying the process for private entrepreneurs to establish new infrastructure. These measures collectively aim to create a robust and accessible charging ecosystem, supporting India's transition to sustainable transportation.
