India's Passenger Vehicle Market Shifts: Cleaner Fuels Outpace Petrol Sales for First Time in August

TL;DR

In August 2026, India's passenger vehicle sales saw cleaner fuels (CNG, hybrids, EVs) collectively outsell petrol for the first time, driven by significant growth in CNG and EV adoption.

India's passenger vehicle market witnessed a historic shift in August 2026, with cleaner-fuel vehicles – encompassing CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles – collectively surpassing petrol-powered cars in sales for the first time. These alternative powertrains accounted for 42% of passenger vehicle sales, while petrol's market share dropped to a record low of 41%. This trend indicates a significant diversification in consumer preferences beyond conventional petrol vehicles.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles played a crucial role in this shift, with their share rising to a record high of 25% from 21% a year earlier. Electric car sales also saw substantial growth, increasing by 52% year-on-year to approximately 30,700 units in August, achieving a 7.7% penetration, up from 5.9% in August 2025. This strong performance places August as the third-best month on record for electric car sales.

Analysts attribute this evolving fuel mix to several factors, including consumer hesitation surrounding the transition to E20 fuel, improvements in charging infrastructure for EVs, and the increasing availability of diverse electric and hybrid models in the market. The trend extends beyond passenger cars, with electric three-wheelers achieving over 65% penetration and electric buses recording their highest-ever monthly sales in August.
