India's Electric Car Market Anticipated to Reach 1.9 Lakh Units in 2026

TL;DR

India's electric car market is projected to hit 1.9 lakh units in 2026, driven by a growing EV ecosystem focusing on battery manufacturing, local supply chains, and charging infrastructure.

Experts in the electric mobility and battery industry project India's battery electric passenger car market to grow significantly, with sales reaching approximately 1.8 lakh to 1.9 lakh units in 2026. This forecast was shared during an industry roundtable in Pune on October 5, ahead of The Battery Show India 2026. The discussions highlighted India's EV ecosystem moving beyond initial adoption to a greater focus on battery manufacturing, supply-chain localization, charging infrastructure, and total cost of ownership.

Prajyot Sathe, Research Director – Mobility – Electric Vehicles at Frost & Sullivan, noted that India's battery electric passenger car market stood at around 178,000 units in 2025, a substantial increase from 99,000 units in 2024. He anticipates continued robust growth, with annual passenger EV sales potentially reaching 1.5 million units by 2032. This indicates a much larger role for electric cars in India's passenger vehicle market in the coming years.

The growth in the passenger EV segment is part of a broader evolution, following the earlier adoption of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and light commercial vehicles and buses. The next phase of market expansion is expected to heavily rely on advancements in battery technology and increased localization of the supply chain, which are critical for building a self-reliant electric mobility and energy-storage ecosystem in India.
