India's electric vehicle (EV) retail sales surged to a record high in August 2026, with 2,98,448 units sold, marking a significant 52.9 percent increase compared to August 2025. This growth boosted the overall EV penetration in the Indian market to 12.3 percent, up from 9.5 percent a year prior. Despite this strong year-on-year performance, August sales saw a sequential dip of approximately 9 percent compared to July's figures.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) highlighted that August 2026 was the strongest August ever for electric mobility across all categories in India. Electric two-wheelers led this surge, with retail sales rising by 67.05 percent year-on-year to 1,83,204 units, although experiencing a 10.35 percent decline from July. Electric three-wheeler sales also saw a 25.28 percent increase year-on-year, reaching 79,846 units, and electric passenger vehicle sales grew by 51.89 percent to 30,696 units. Notably, electric commercial vehicles nearly tripled their sales, reaching 4,702 units, marking their best-ever monthly performance.
