Indian Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Achieve Record Growth in Early 2026

TL;DR

Indian electric passenger vehicle sales surpassed 2 lakh units in the first eight months of 2026, exceeding 2025's full-year total, demonstrating rapid EV adoption with Tata Motors leading the market.

India has marked a significant milestone in electric mobility, with retail sales of electric passenger vehicles (EPVs) surpassing the 2-lakh unit mark within the first eight months of 2026. This figure notably exceeds the total registrations recorded for the entire calendar year 2025, signaling an accelerating adoption rate for EVs across the country. According to Vahan data, a total of 212,191 electric passenger vehicles were registered between January and August 2026.

The surge in EPV sales is largely attributed to a wider selection of available models and increasing participation from both established automotive manufacturers and newer players in the electric vehicle segment. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles continues to lead the Indian electric car market, commanding a substantial 39.2% market share with 83,254 registrations during this period. The expanding choice of models and competitive offerings are key factors driving this robust growth in the electric passenger vehicle sector, with EVs now accounting for 6.2% of total passenger vehicle registrations, up from 4.3% in 2025.
