The Indian automobile industry experienced significant retail sales growth in September 2026, with a total of 25,36,920 units registered, marking a 31.82% year-on-year (YoY) increase. This robust performance was also reflected in month-on-month growth of 4.69%. Key drivers included early festive buying, consistent demand from rural and semi-urban areas, and a rising preference for premium motorcycles.
Breaking down the figures, two-wheeler retail sales surged by 33.08% YoY to 17,90,188 units, recording the best-ever September for this segment and surpassing pre-Covid levels from 2018. Passenger vehicle retails also saw a substantial 32.10% YoY growth, reaching 4,27,213 units. While overall growth was strong, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) noted that this was the year's most 'base-distorted growth print,' suggesting tougher comparisons for subsequent months.
