Honda India Explores Local Production for Expanding Premium Motorcycle Range

TL;DR

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India is planning to localize production and expand its premium motorcycle offerings in India, leveraging strong growth in the segment.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is considering expanding its premium motorcycle lineup in India and localizing production at its plants, provided the segment's strong growth continues. This strategic move comes as competitors like TVS, Hero, and Bajaj intensify their efforts to capture the attention of young, aspirational buyers in the rapidly growing premium motorcycle market.

The premium category, defined as motorcycles with an engine capacity above 125cc, witnessed a significant 15% surge in sales to 3.5 million units in fiscal year 2026, indicating a clear market shift. Honda plans to capitalize on this trend by introducing new global premium models and localizing more of its existing range once sufficient sales volumes are achieved. The company is also investing over ₹2,000 crore to expand its overall production capacities, aiming to add more than 1.2 million units annually.
