TL;DR
First-time car buyers are driving a resurgence in India's small car segment, significantly boosting overall automotive retail sales, particularly for Maruti Suzuki's entry-level models.
India's automobile market continued its upward trajectory in June 2026, with overall vehicle retail sales rising almost 22% year-on-year to a record 2.6 million units. A significant factor behind this surge is the return of first-time car buyers, which has revitalized small car sales after years of SUV dominance.
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker with an extensive entry-level portfolio, saw first-time buyers account for 51% of its sales in Q4 FY26. Sales in its mini segment, including the Alto and S-Presso, increased by 78%, while compact and mid-sized cars grew by nearly 16%. This trend indicates that the passenger vehicle market is expanding at both ends, accommodating aspirational buyers seeking larger vehicles and price-sensitive households re-entering the market, partly fueled by the tailwinds of GST 2.0.
