Delhi Unveils Progressive EV Policy with Scrappage Incentives to Combat Pollution

TL;DR

Delhi's new EV Policy 2026 allocates ₹15,000 crore, offering incentives for scrapping older vehicles, banning new gasoline two-wheeler registrations by 2028, and aiming to install over 30,000 public charging points to combat air pollution.

The Delhi government has approved a far-reaching new electric vehicle (EV) policy aimed at tackling the severe air pollution plaguing the capital. This comprehensive framework, effective July 2026, includes substantial incentives for vehicle owners to transition to electric models, notably offering over US$1,000 to scrap older gasoline-powered vehicles for battery-electric replacements. The policy's core objective is to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, which are a primary contributor to Delhi's air quality crisis.

Under the 'Delhi EV Policy 2026', an allocation of ₹15,000 crore (approximately US$1.75 billion) over four years is designated to accelerate electrification. Key measures include ending new registrations of gasoline-powered two-wheelers by 2028 and mandating electric new auto-rickshaws. Furthermore, the plan incorporates the establishment of more than 30,000 public charging points across the city to alleviate range anxiety, a major barrier to EV adoption. Owners scrapping eligible passenger vehicles purchased before April 1, 2020, can receive incentives of about ₹100,000 (roughly US$1,060).
