Delhi Bolsters EV Charging Infrastructure with Approval of 382 New Sites

TL;DR

Delhi's Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved 382 sites for EV charging to accelerate the city's electric vehicle transition ahead of mandatory EV-only registration deadlines.

Delhi's electric vehicle transition has taken a significant step forward with the Ministry of Heavy Industries approving 382 out of 456 identified sites for EV charging infrastructure. These sites, reassessed for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, consider electricity availability and grid capacity, addressing a major hurdle in the city's EV roadmap.

The urgency behind this rollout is driven by Delhi's new EV policy, which sets mandatory electric-only registration deadlines starting January 1, 2027, for three-wheelers and N1 light commercial vehicles, and April 1, 2028, for new two-wheelers. While the sites are approved, the focus now shifts to the operational readiness of these chargers.

The government is preparing tenders for the initial 160-180 high-readiness locations, with subsequent phases to follow for the remaining approved sites. This initiative is crucial as Delhi moves towards restricting new petrol and CNG vehicle registrations, making the pace of charger deployment vital for commuters, fleet operators, and delivery businesses.
