VinFast Boosts Indian EV Production Capacity for Buses and Scooters with $500 Million Investment

TL;DR

VinFast is investing $500 million to expand its Tamil Nadu EV plant to manufacture electric buses and scooters, reinforcing its commitment to the Indian market and green mobility.

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast has committed an additional $500 million to expand its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India. This investment is earmarked for broadening the company's product portfolio to include electric buses and two-wheelers, alongside its existing electric car production. The expansion marks the second phase of VinFast’s $2 billion regional plan, underscoring its long-term commitment to the Indian automotive market.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday, VinFast will receive approximately 200 hectares of land in the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, adjacent to its current facility. The state government will also provide support for securing permits and establishing essential infrastructure connections, such as electricity, water, roads, and waste management.

The new phase of investment will focus on developing dedicated workshops and production lines for electric buses and e-scooters, encompassing manufacturing, assembly, and testing. This move is expected to create new job opportunities, advance localization efforts, and strengthen the skills of the local workforce, further cementing Tamil Nadu’s role as a strategic hub for VinFast’s global expansion and supporting India's green mobility objectives.
