Uno Minda Chairman Nirmal Kumar Minda advocates for India to collaborate with China on EV technologies for 5-10 years, citing China's EV leadership.
Nirmal Kumar Minda, Executive Chairman of auto component maker Uno Minda, has suggested that India should collaborate with China on electric vehicle (EV) technologies for the next five to ten years. This recommendation, made around October 28, 2025, stems from China's advanced lead in the EV sector, with approximately 40 percent of vehicles manufactured there being electric. Minda emphasized that such collaboration should be pursued without compromising national security or sovereignty, aiming for a mutually beneficial 'win-win' situation.
Uno Minda, which holds a 70 percent stake in a venture producing e-axles, motors, inverters, and charging units for passenger and commercial vehicles, typically engages in collaborations or acquisitions only when they introduce new technologies that can be cost-effectively developed in India. Minda highlighted the challenges of de-risking entirely from China and stressed that acquisitions should prioritize bringing in new technology that can be localized at a lower cost.
Currently, about 89 percent of Uno Minda's revenue is generated from the domestic market, with 11 percent from exports. The company aims to increase its export revenue to approximately 20 percent of its total revenue within the next five to six years, supported by new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). This strategic outlook underscores the importance of technological partnerships and localized manufacturing for India's ambitions in the global automotive and EV markets.
